I am not above using jarred pasta sauce. I fact, you can see how I doctor a jar to taste more like homemade here.
But I much prefer to make it from scratch. The flavor is just so much better and I can control the ingredients. And it’s so much cheaper.
Plus I can freeze the leftovers to have on hand for future bowls of pasta or recipes. FYI, about 3 cups equals a jar of sauce.
The 3 meats I’m using for this recipe are ground beef, Italian sausage, and prosciutto. Prosciutto is an Italian ham. You can usually find it in the deli department by the specialty Italian foods.
Start with a really big skillet or dutch oven. Cook the ground beef, Italian sausage, and prosciutto with the onions, green pepper, and garlic over medium high heat, stirring occasionally, until the ground beef and sausage are no longer pink; about 10 minutes.
Drain it and place the mixture in your slow cooker. Add the mushrooms, Italian seasoning, and all of the tomatoes.
Stir well to combine.
Cook on low for 4-6 hours. My slow cooker automatically switches to “warm” when the cook time is done, so I don’t even need to be home when it’s done cooking.
Stir before serving. If you like your sauce a little thinner, just add some water or beef broth.
